Feed in Tariffs (FITs) Explained

Feed in Tariffs (FITs) are payments made to ordinary people (home owners, schools, businesses, etc.) for producing renewable energy.

The FITs were introduced by the UK Government to help raise the level of renewable energy being produced in Britain to fit in with the targets of the 2008 Climate Change Act. By 2020, the Government is obligated to hit a target of 15% renewable energy, which is to increase to 80% by 2050. FITs help encourage the production and use of renewable energy by everyday people.

When you install renewable power systems such as solar PV panels, you’ll register to participate in a Feed in Tariff scheme, if you qualify.

How do Feed in Tariffs Work?

There are two types of Feed in Tariff:
1) The Generation Tariff: a fixed income is earned for every KWh of electricity produced, regardless of whether or not you use it to power your appliances.
2) The Export Tariff: you earn an income based on how much energy you sell back to the National Grid.
Participating in a Feed in Tariff Scheme:

  • Allows you to do your bit for the environment by generating your own clean, green electricity.
  • Provides an additional TAX FREE income for the electricity you produce and even more additional income from your electricity supplier if you export power to the Grid.
  • Reduces your standard electricity costs, as you produce a proportion of electricity yourself – which is free!

As of April 2012, the Feed in Tariff rates for solar PV are as follows:

1st April 2012 – 1st July 2012

Proof that property has an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) Band D or above is required in order to qualify.
If your property is not an EPC band D when you apply for FIT, the rate will be 9p/kWh.

1st July 2012 onwards

Rates are still to be decided. They may be approximately 16.5p/kWh – 13.6p/kWh for EPC Band D properties.
